Chicken Masala Gravy

Today I am showing an authentic and north indian style chicken gravy which is my friends favorite. It can be eaten with indian roti, rice ,naan or chapatis. In this chicken gravy I have used whole garam masala which has given this gravy a nice flavor.

Serve – 3 -4



Chicken – 750 g (cleaned and cut into curry pieces)

Onion – 1(chopped)

Tomato – 1 big

Bay leaf – 1-2

Green cardamon – 2-3

Black cardamon – 2-3

Clove – 4-5

Cinnamon stick – 1 inch

Curd – 2 tbsp

Garam masala – 1 tsp

Salt – as per taste

Oil – 6 -7 tbsp or as require

Water – ½ to ¾ cup

Coriander leaves – for garnishing


Onion – 4 medium

Ginger – 1 inch

Garlic – 8 – 10

Green chilly – 1

Cumin/jeera – 2 tsp

Dry coriander seeds – 1 tbsp



Take ingredients under (for making paste) in a big blender and make fine paste. Keep it aside.

Heat oil in a pan or kadai, put bay leaf, green cardamon, black cardamon, cloves and cinnamon stick,  let them crackle.

Now add chopped onion,  fry the onion till it becomes translucent,  then add red chilly, turmeric and  coriander powder. Fry for a minute.

Now add blended paste,  stir and fry this paste till its leave oil from the corner.

Add chicken pieces,  stir and fry the chicken for 5-7 minutes in medium flame.

Now add chopped tomato and salt, stir and cover the pan or kadai with the lid,  let the chicken cook in tomato juice for 5-7 minutes in low flame.

After 7 minutes open the lid add curd,  stir, add water and garam masala,  again cover with lid and cook till chicken gets soft and cooked. It will take about 8 – 10 minutes.

When chicken gets cooked add fresh chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.

Now chicken gravy is ready,  serve hot with naan, chapati or rice.

In Short



Grind ingredients under for making paste


Heat oil, add bay leaf, green cardamon, black cardamon, cinnamon and cloves


Now add chopped onion


Red chilly, turmeric and coriander pwdr


Add grinded paste


Add chicken 


 Mix chicken with masala, fry for 5-7 mins


Add tomato and salt, mix well


Cover with the lid, cook for 5-7 mins


Add curd  and mix


Add water and garam masala mix


Cover with the lid and cook till chicken gets cook


Garnish with the coriander
