Tomato-Chutney (South Indian Style)

Mouth watery Tomato – chutney which goes well with idli, dosa, paniyaram and paratha. Very easy to make and handy. Lets see how to make this chutney and share your feedback.

Preparation time – 5 mins

Cooking time – 10 mins

Recipe type – Chutney

Serve – 2-3

Medium spicy



Tomato – 2 medium (chopped)

Red chilly – 2-3 or as needed

Chana dal/gram dal – 1 tbsp

Urad dal/ black gram dal – 1 tsp

Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp

Curry leaves – 5-6

Tamarind – 1 inch
Asafoetida- a pinch

Oil – 2 tsp (sesame or any other oil)

salt -as per taste



In a kadai medium heat  1 1/2 tsp of oil and add channa dal, urad dal, red chilly, curry leaves and mustard .

Fry them till chana dal and urad dal turn light brown in medium heat. (do not make them brown)let them cool.

Take them out add tamarind , fry it for few seconds. Take it out.

If needed add some more oil and add tomato, asafoetida fry them for 2 mins or until they become little soft.let them cool.

Take these ingredients which we fried, in a blender and add salt.

Blend them(if needed add little  water) and make chutney.

Tomato-Chutney is ready serve it with idli dosa or chapati.



you can preserve it in freeze for 2-3 days.


In Short



Heat  1 1/2 tsp oil fry chana dal, urad dal, red chilly, turmeric, curry leaves and mustard seeds, until light brown


In remaining oil fry tamarind, few seconds


Let them cool


Add some more oil fry tomato and asafoetida, till tomato starts  mushy


Let them cool and put them in a blender, add salt


If needed add 2 tsp of water, blend nicely and make chutney
