Beetroot Pulao/Beetroot Rice Recipe

Beetroot rice with many health benefits and delicious way to feed your kids beetroot. Easy and simple recipe with flavor of herbs and masala. Try this recipe and let me know how it came for you.

Preparation time – 15 mins

Cooking time – 25 mins

Recipe type – main

Cuisine – India

Serve – 2-3

1 Cup = 220 ml



Basmati rice or any regular rice – 1 cup

Beetroot – 1 medium or ¼ cup (finely chopped)

Carrot – 1 medium or ¼ cup (finely chopped)

Green peas – 2 tbsp

Onion – 1 medium (sliced)

Ginger-garlic – ½ tsp (crushed or paste)

Green chilly – 1 (sliced)

Red chilly powder – ¼ tsp (optional)

Garam masala – ¼ tsp

Fresh coriander leaves – 2 tbsp (chopped)

Fresh mint leaves – 2 tbsp (chopped)

Ghee/oil – 2 tbsp

Water – 1 ¾ cup for cooker OR 2 ½ for pot

To Temper

Bay leaf – 1

Cumin/jeera – ½ tsp

Clove/laung – 2

Green cardamon – 2

Cinnamon stick – ½ inch

Anise flower – ½ (optional)

Javitri/mace – 1 strand (optional)


 Soak rice in enough water for 20 mins. After 20 mins drain the rice and keep side.

 Prepare veggies and other ingredients for making pulao.

 Heat oil/ghee in cooker add ingredients under for ‘to temper’, let crackle.

 Add sliced onion and green chilly, fry till light brown.

 Add ginger-garlic (paste or crushed), saute till raw smell goes.

 Add chopped beetroot, carrot and green peas, fry for a minute.

 Add ½ of the mint and coriander leaves, red chilly and garam masala powder, stir well.

Add rice stir well.

 Add water, rest mint and coriander leaves and salt, stir and close the cooker’s lid.

 Pressure cook pulao for 2 whistle or after 1 whistle cook for a minute in low heat.



You can add veggies according to your taste.

You can add chopped potatoes too.

If using pot for making pulao add water accordingly.

You can use any flavored or regular rice for making thing pulao.


In Short



Soak rice for 20 mins


Prepare veggies


These are the whole garam masala


Heat oil or ghee, add whole garam masala


Add sliced onion and green chilly, fry till translucent


Add ginger – garlic, fry till raw smell goes off


Add beetroot, carrot and peas, fry for a minute


Add  garam masala, red chilly powder and 1/2 of the mint – coriander leaves


Add rice


Add water,  salt and remaining mint- coriander leaves, stir


Pressure cook pulao for 2 whistle, settle down on its own


Beetroot pulao is ready
