Palak Dal/Spinach Lentil Recipe

This healthy and tasty palak dal is goes well with rice and chapati.

Serve – 2-3



Mesurement cup used, 1 cup = 220 ml

For cooking dal

Arhar dal/pigeon pea – ½ cup

Salt – as per taste

Turmeric – ½ tsp

Water – 2 cups

For making dal palak

Butter or ghee or oil – 1 1/5 tbsp

Palak/spinach – 1 to 1 ½ cup or 75 to 100 g

Cumin/jeera – ½ tsp

Mustard – ½ tsp

Onion – 1 medium or 40 g (sliced)

Green chili – 1 -2 chopped

Garlic – 5-6 (sliced or crushed) if you want you can add 1/2 ‘ crushed garlic too

Tomato – 1 medium to big (Sliced cut or finely chopped)

Red chili powder – ½ tsp

Hing/Ashafotida – 2 pinch

Water – ½ to 1 cup

Salt – as per taste

Fresh coriander leaves – for garnishing


For pressure cooking dal

First take dal in pressure cook rinse it 2-3 times in water.

Drain it nicely and add turmeric, salt and 2 cup of water.

For pressure cooking after 1 whistle keep the flame low for 10 min.

Let cooker settles down on its own. Keep cooked dal aside.

For making Dal Palak

In a pan or kadai heat oil/butter/ ghee and add Cumin and mustard seeds.

Let them splutter nicely.

Add sliced onion, saute till onion turn light brown.

Add crushed garlic, saute for 3-4 seconds.

Add red chilly and hing, stir once.

Add sliced or chopped tomato with pinch of salt.

Saute till tomato gets little soft.

Add finely chopped spinach, stir well.

Cook the spinach at low flame for a min or till it gets soft by putting lid.

Now open the lid add cooked arhar dal , mix well.

Add required water (I have added ½ cup) and check salt, if needed add more. Mix again.

Bring this mixture to boil and cook at simmer for a minute. Stir in between.

Garnish with chopped and fresh coriander leaves.

Spinach dal is ready. Serve chapati, tandoori roti and steamed or jeera rice.


In Short


Rinse 1/2 cup of  dal with water 2-3 time


Add salt and turmeric


Add 2 cups of water and pressure cook it, for pressure cooking after 1 whistle lower the flame and cook for 8-10 more minutes


Let cooker settles down on it own, dal is ready keep it aside


Heat ghee in a pan


Add cumin and mustard


Add sliced onion and  chopped green chili


Add grated garlic, stir for 3-4 seconds


Add hing and red chili powder, stir once


Add sliced tomato and salt


Saute till tomato gets little soft


Add palak/spinach




Put lid so that spinach will be turn soft fastly, cook for a minute over low flame


After removing lid


Add cooked dal and 1/2 to 1 cup of water, stir


Bring it to boil and simmer the flame, cook for a minute and stir in between


Add chopped coriander leaves , stir and turn off the flame


Palak dal is ready
