Easy Coconut Chutney
South Indian coconut chutney is very easy and simple that goes well with all south Indian breakfast. At my kitchen I never follow any specific method of making coconut chutney because there are so many method of making coconut chutney. For me it depends on ingredients availability and my mood. So here i am sharing one of the method of making this chutney , I hope You will like this simple way.
Preparation time – 5 mins
Recipe type – side dish / chutney
Serve – 2-3
Grated coconut or cut into very small pieces – ½ cup
Roasted chana dal – 2 tbsp
Green chili – 2-3 or as per taste
Ginger – ¼ inch
Water – ¼ cup or as needed
Salt – as per taste
For the seasoning
Sesame oil or any other cooking oil – 2 tsp
Urad dal / black gram dal – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Curry leaves – 1 stem
Whole red chili – 1 broken
Hing / asafotida – 2 pinch
In a blender take grated coconut and roasted chana dal. Then add chopped ginger, broken green chili and salt. Pour water and blend till smooth consistency. set aside.
For the seasoning
Heat oil in a small pan. When the oil is medium hot add urad dal, stir till dal is turning light pink.
Add mustard seeds and wait until it crackles.
Add curry leaves and broken red chili. Stir until curry leaves turns crispy and red chili changes color.
Transfer the seasoning to the prepared coconut chutney, mix nicely.
Coconut chutney is ready serve it with idli, dosa or any south Indian breakfast.
Take finely chopped or grated coconut + roseted chana dal in a blender
Add green chili
Add chopped ginger
Blend till fine paste, set aside
When oil is medium hot turn the flame at low then add urad dal / black gram dal
When the dal is turn light pink then add mustard seeds, let it crackle
Add curry leaves
Add broken red chilies, stir
Immediately turn off the flame
Add this seasoning to the coconut paste , stir and chutney is ready
